In this paper on pages 12-18 I discuss a case study in which I demonstrate the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and solution focused brief therapy.
d. Evidence-based counseling practices
On pages 5-10 of this paper, I review many areas of best practices in counseling, including: biological, psychological, social, and spiritual assessment; DSM diagnosis; case conceptualization; developing a treatment plan; outcomes assessment; and aftercare planning.
e. Methods for evaluating counseling effectiveness
This is a client evaluation form that was completed by five different clients after counseling sessions with me.

On page 6 of both of these case conceptualizations I address cultural and ethical factors with these clients.
Reflections
1. Reflect on the process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency. What has been especially impactful/meaningful/important to you personally and professionally?
I have to admit that I was not looking forward to doing a counseling practicum for this program. It seemed that was a milestone I had already made it through when I was getting licensed, and I didn't want to go back to that place of being a novice. However, it was such an enriching experience to get a supervisor again and to regularly meet and discuss my cases. It really showed me the continued value of supervision. In fact, it was such a great experience that when my class ended, I kept my supervisor, and I continue to meet with her periodiocally.
2. Describe an area of strength that you have developed while in the program in this area of competency. What is one way you plan to utilize this strength in your vocation?
Looking back, I think the biggest area of strength I have developed is my openness to feedback as a counselor. As a suggestion from my supervisor, I have begun asking my clients for feedback more often. And though challenging at times, I remain open to discussing when I have made a mistake, or there has been a rupture in the relationship. I was not good at this and was quite scared of these types of conversations previously. I have come to recognize the humanity of being a counselor, which means I can always learn from others (including clients) how to be a better counselor and that I will inevitably make mistakes.
3. Describe an area of challenge/growth opportunity in this area of competency. What is your plan to develop excellence in this area?
Diagnosing clients is probably the area in which I am the weakest within the counseling competency. I have worked mainly in outpatient treatment settings, mostly private pay, and thus do not have the requirement to diagnose each client. I have recently found myself needing to work on this weakness as I supervise the intern at our site. I think continuing as a supervisor will actually help strengthen this weakness.
4. Reflect on how faith in Christ relates to this competency.
My faith in Christ is foundational and interwoven into my view of counseling. I know that God has called me to be a counselor and to express His love and grace to the broken and lost. This is not necessarily done through direct and biblical conversations, but more so in the presence that I hold for my clients; a presence that, if I am there, so is God, whether my clients are aware of Him or not. I lean on the idea that God never gives up on people and has created them unique and loved, this is a premise I approach all my clients with. Honoring them as an individual, deeply caring about them, and having hope for their specific situation.
